Sourcing quality compost and mulch has been one of this year’s biggest challenges. Big production farms like Cham Shan Farm have taken a creative approach to solving this issue with the help of our locally appointed soil expert. BFA application (made with fulvic acid) is a new practice adopted this year by our grantees that decomposes green material into compost in a shorter time frame. Farmer Pat Fan dilutes it with water and applies it directly to plots with leftover produce and other biomass, quickly turning the material into compost in just a month. For mulch, the batch that Pat Fan received earlier in the year is relatively high in nitrogen, so BFA solutions are also applied to decompose the material, turning it into a near compost with a high fungi ratio.
